According to a survey conducted by Ipsos Global Trust Monitor, India has emerged as the country with the highest level of trust in its government.

The research firm conducted a survey in 21 countries. The survey targeted individuals between the ages of 16 to 74 years in most countries and 18 to 74 years in Canada, South Africa, Turkey, and the United States.

Urban Indians exhibited greater trust than distrust across all 11 institutions and organisations, according to the survey conducted by the research firm over a period of 15 days in August-September of last year.

Among all the markets, trust in the Indian government was the highest, with 52 per cent. Additionally, the following were the most trusted entities among urban Indians:

technology companies - 57 per cent
energy organisations - 57 per cent
banking institutions - 57 per cent

A trust gap exists for some industries among global citizens, particularly in government, oil and gas, and social media companies, as per the survey.

“Netizens trust technology companies most, followed by organisations and institutions in energy, banking, retail, financial services, pharmaceuticals, consumer packaged goods, government, oil and gas.

"Most of these organisations work within a regulated market framework with conformance to laws and guidelines. Institutions are built on a bed rock of values, ethics, and culture, which build their ethos,” said Amit Adarkar, CEO, Ipsos India, reported The Indian Express.

“There is a huge emphasis on ethics and a greater sense of expectation from corporates in giving back to society. Sustainability is emerging as a strong area, in reducing adverse impact on the environment, from the citizens’ stand point,” he added.

According to the survey, the crucial indicators of trust for organisations among urban Indians were transparency about their operations (33 per cent), sustainability (33 per cent), responsible behavior (29 per cent), among other factors.

In contrast, global citizens deemed reliability (36 per cent), transparency about operations (35 per cent), and responsible behavior (31per cent) as the most significant factors in establishing trust.
